Camouflage for Vitiligo Patches

I believe many of us first learned about vitiligo through popular culture's references to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Those of us who grew up in the late 20th century often assumed he was bleaching his skin to adopt a more European appearance. Boy, were we wrong.

Jackson was diagnosed with vitiligo, a condition that causes the skin to lose pigment in patches. With the upcoming biopic about his life, audiences will finally get a closer look at the truth behind the soulful singer and charismatic star’s journey—including how vitiligo shaped his appearance. Thanks to his larger-than-life persona and trailblazing supermodels like Winnie Harlow, more people today feel empowered to openly share their experiences with vitiligo.
This autoimmune condition causes the skin to lose pigmentation over time, resulting in white patches. My husband and mother both live with vitiligo, and I show early signs of it myself. While the condition is completely harmless medically, it can still create emotional insecurities for those affected.

There are effective ways to camouflage the depigmented patches and reduce their appearance. Many people rely on foundation or skin-toned makeup for daily coverage. Others explore vitamins, topical treatments, or more advanced options. At Chrysalis Spectrum Beauty, we specialize in semi-permanent camouflage tattoos—a longer-lasting solution for those seeking freedom from daily makeup routines.
For the best results, a client’s vitiligo needs to be stable for a minimum of three years. This is crucial because active or universal vitiligo can spread with skin trauma (known as the Koebner phenomenon). During the process, we discuss realistic expectations and custom-blend pigments to perfectly match the client’s surrounding skin tone in the treatment area.
The initial consultation typically lasts about an hour and includes a patch test to assess how the skin responds. We use high-quality pigments from NUE Conceal and Tina Davies—reputable brands in the paramedical tattoo industry that formulate with pigments (not traditional inks) designed for skin camouflage.
The number of sessions depends on the size of the area and the client’s skin tone. Those with fairer complexions (Fitzpatrick types I–III) often see excellent results in as few as 2–3 sessions, while those with deeper tones (Fitzpatrick types IV–VI) may require 4–5 sessions for optimal blending.

There is a 4- to 6-week healing period between sessions to allow the skin to fully recover. The procedure itself involves minimal discomfort—many clients even fall asleep during treatment! Using a rotary tattoo machine, we deposit layered pigments that match the client’s natural complexion. We start with a slightly lighter base shade, as it’s easier to build up to a darker tone than to lighten one. To create a realistic, dimensional look, we incorporate subtle variations in shade, mirroring how natural skin isn’t perfectly uniform in color.
Pricing ranges from $365 to $1,200 depending on the size of the area treated. Clients can pay per session or opt for a package, which offers the best value. Results typically last 2–3 years, with occasional touch-ups recommended to maintain the color.
Aftercare is straightforward: Keep the treated area protected from direct sun, avoid prolonged exposure to hot water, and apply Aquaphor for the first 7 days. Expect the area to appear slightly darker initially, with minor redness and light swelling for the first 2–3 days.

The second photo is a woman in her mid 20s with Type II skin and the image shows what her camouflage tattoo looks like after the second session. The last photo is a woman in her early 70s with Type IV skin with a camouflage tattoo on the vitiligo spot at the top of her foot.
